Protest against NATO base in Ulyanovsk

More than 800 people participated in a rally held by Russian communists on Saturday to
protest the creation of a NATO transit hub in the Volga city of Ulyanovsk,
birthplace of Vladimir Lenin, RIA-Novosti reports.
Members of the communist party from various regions of Russia gathered
under the leadership of the party's leader, Gennady Zyuganov, in the center of
Ulyanovsk on Saturday. Supporters of "The Just Russia" party, as well as
activists of the Left Front Movement and "The Other Russia" and journalists
took part in the rally and the march which followed.
Government intentions to allow NATO to build a transit hub for Afghan
transit operations in the Volga region has caused mass protests. The
protesters claim that the presence of NATO forces would undermine Russia's
national interests and security.
