The Prosecutor General’s Office of Abkhazia said on Monday that information on the assassination attempt on Abkhaz President Alexander Ankvab cannot be published for reasons of safety of the sides involved in the process, RIA Novosti reports.
Some media reported that questioning of suspects may have caused their suicides.
Former Abkhaz Interior Minister Almasbey Kchach committed suicide in Gagry on April 17, while another man involved, Timur Khutaba, committed suicide at a detention center.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said that Kchach has never been questioned. Kchach had the dead police general in his apartment.
Prosecutor General Safarbey Mikanboy held a meeting with MPs at the parliament on Monday. He informed them about the case on the attempted assassination of Ankvab.
Ankvab’s convoy was ambushed on February 22. He was fired on at the Gudaut-Sukhumi Highway near the village of Druzhba in the Gudautsky District at 8.25 am. Two of his bodyguards died, several were injured. A vehicle was burned out. Six suspects were detained on April 12, two of whom were released. Four were arrested by the Sukhumi Court on April 14.
