The report on human rights in the North Caucasus will be the main event next week at the start of the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE); Ingush president Yunus-Bek Yevkurov is planning to give a speech at the discussion for the first time, RIA Novosti reports.
The report of Swiss parliamentarian Dick Marty on the North Caucasus region will be presented on June 22th.
Marty's report states that the authorities of Chechnya are supporting an atmosphere of fear, and that disappearances of opposition members and human rights activists are still taking place. Marty notes increasing violence in Ingushetia, and that terrorist attacks have become more frequent in Dagestan, leading to tough actions from the side of the law enforcement agencies.
The North Caucasus has been included on the agenda of an Assembly session for the first time in a few years. Since October 2008, PACE has usually been discussing relations between Russia and Georgia regarding the August events in South Ossetia.
