Russians arrested in Libya ask Putin for help

Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians arrested in Libya have called their presidents for help, Interfax reports.

59-year old Russian Alexander Shadrov wrote a personal letter to Putin. The letter states that the Russians were arrested without reason and efforts of the Russian Embassy in Libya is not enough for their release. Shadrov said that embassy staff skipped the latest session of the court.

The arrested Russians sent messages to Moscow and hope that they will be published in media. They say that they were working in Libya according to contracts. The next session was set for May 21.

Shadrov said earlier that the embassy lacked funds for lawyers. Neither was he explained reasons for the arrest. Shadrov added that the detention conditions violate hygiene standards.

Vladimir Dolgov and Alexander Shadrov were arrested in Libya in late August 2011. They were in a group with 3 Belarusians and 20 Ukrainians during the fights for Tripoli. They were accused of repairing vehicles of Muammar al-Gaddafi’s army.
