NATO again promises Georgia membership without certainties

The leaders of NATO member countries reaffirmed their support for Georgia's membership of NATO at a summit in Chicago, refraining from specific statements on the terms and conditions.

Based on the expansion plans it is not only Georgia with prospects of joining NATO, but also Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

NATO member states declared their intention to "continue to encourage and actively support the implementation of all the necessary reforms in Georgia, including in the field of democracy, elections and the judiciary, as well as reforms in the field of security and defense."

The director of the Center for Public Policy Research, Vladimir Yevseev, stated in an interview to VK that forcing Georgia's membership of NATO will complicate relations between Moscow and the West regarding Iran's nuclear program, NATO cargo transit through Russia and issues of nuclear security on the Korean peninsula.

Yevseev noted that NATO leaders are governed by such issues as deployment of missile defense in Europe, plans for a second shield of missile defense system and withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan in promising Georgia NATO membership.

However, he stressed that there is no impression that the NATO countries are giving Georgia full support in joining NATO soon.
