Georgia demands explanations from Turkey considering Batumi own territory

Georgian public officials demand Turkish Ambassador Levent Burkhan to explain why Turkish schoolbooks call Batumi, capital of Adjara, the territory of Turkey, Vzglyad reports.

Georgy Gabashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Culture, Science and Education and a leader of the pro-presidential majority of Georgia, demanded the issue be resolved.

MP Georgy Tsagareishvili of the Free Democrats’ Party said that the government cannot even resolve such minor issues with Turkey as a strategic partner.

Adjara became part of Georgia according to the Kars Treaty of 1921. The region was part of the Ottoman Empire from the second half of the 16th century to 1878. The current border lies according to the border of the USSR.
