Kofi Annan, special envoy of the UN and LAS for Syria, will hold a briefing at the UN Security Council and propose the formation of a contact group on Syria, ITAR-TASS reports.
The Contact group will include the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Iran. The group should implement a peace plan proposed earlier and keep Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in touch with the opposition.
Diplomats say that Annan’s peace plan has failed and that its points have been violated by both the Syrian regime and the opposition.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said Thursday that the US approach to Syria is under consideration. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed doubts that Russia would hold an international council involving Iran.
Annan’s new initiative is expected to be decided on this week. He will hold a session at the UN Security Council in New York and then travel to Washington to discuss it with Clinton.
