Heavy snow cuts off South Ossetia’s electricity supplies

South Ossetia has been left completely with electricity due to heavy snow on the Trans-Caucasian highway, which snapped power lines, a spokesperson for the North Ossetian emergencies ministry said, Itar-Tass reported. He said the republic had been without electricity since 0100.

"Avalanches most likely damaged high-voltage power lines connecting South and North Ossetia. A team of specialists have already gone to inspect the power lines and they should determine the place and the cause of power outages in the republic," the spokesperson said.

North Ossetian rescuers at any time ready to come to the aid of their colleagues from the south, if necessary. The situation also remains difficult in the northern sector of the Trans-Caucasian highway, coming from Russia, with snow continuing to fall and causing additional avalanches. The mountain pass road connecting Russia to the South Caucasus has been closed for more than a day. Over the 24 hours, there have been at least 28 avalanches totaling an estimated 15,000 cubic meters of snow.
