The Center of the Seismological Service of the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences has denied information of the Massachusetts Institute for Technology about high risks of earthquakes in Baku, it was stated by Tahir Mamedli, deputy head of the section for seismological and geodynamic studies of the center, Trend reports.
The only threats may be seen in the Caspian Sea. There are no risks for Baku or Absheron. Baku may feel earthquakes of about 1 points on the Richter scale at the Primorsky Avenue, Sabailsky, Nasiminsky and Khatainsky Districts.
Soviet buildings in Baku were constructed to withstand an earthquake of 6-7 points. Scientists in 1978 expected no greater earthquakes than that. Some say that earthquakes may reach 8 points today.
Mammedli said that a 10-point earthquake could occur in the Shamakhy-Ismailly-Qabala zone. A 9-point earthquake is expected there.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology said that their data was based on 10 years of studies.
