Iran and Cyprus discuss bilateral relations and international developments

Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says the Islamic Republic and Cyprus should discover and mobilize their enormous economic and trade capacities in order to further promote bilateral relations, Press TV reports.

In a Tuesday meeting with Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias in Cyprus’ capital city, Nicosia, Salehi said Cyprus is the closest member of the European Union to the Middle East and Iran is also an important country in this region which enables them to cooperate in protecting the region's interests.

Noting that Cyprus will be the next president of the EU, Salehi said there are suitable grounds to remove misunderstandings between Iran and the EU through rationality and good management.

The Iranian foreign minister stated that the relations between Tehran and Nicosia are progressing, adding that Iran was among the first countries to recognize the independence of Cyprus.
