President of the European Union Herman van Rompuy is on a visit to South Caucasus to have meetings in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. He will stay in Armenia until tomorrow. The visit will continue on July 3-5, RIA Novosti reports.
Rompuy will meet Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, Speaker of Parliament Ovik Abramyan in Yerevan and make a speech at the parliament.
The EU president will then attend the Armenia in Europe Forum, visit the Yerevan – World Book Capital and the 500th anniversary of Armenian book-printing exhibitions organized by UNESCO and the National Gallery of Armenia. Rompuy will discuss domestic policy, regional issues of mutual interest. Experts say that he will discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Rompuy noted that the EU supports regular political dialogue of both Armenia and Azerbaijan and reminded that Philippe Lefaure was appointed as a special envoy to South Caucasus and Georgian crisis. The EU supports formation of a mechanism to investigate violations of the cease-fire regime on the contact line.
The European Union wants to offer more assistance in maintaining links between peoples of Armenia and Azerbaijan. It would improve trust and give people suffering from the conflict a chance to take part in the peace process.
