The UK insists on adding article 7 of the UN Charter to the new resolution text on Syria, allowing military action in case of threats to world peace, BBC reports.
The passing of such a resolution may cause Libyan or Iraqi scenarios, ITAR-TASS reports.
The document may be introduced for voting next week. Stress is put on sanctions rather than use of force.
Kommersant reported yesterday that the US is trying to convince Russia to provide political asylum for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. A Russian diplomat said that al-Assad has a 10% chance to keep power in the country. Russia does not want military intervention in Syria, the source says.
Moscow says that al-Assad’s resignation is an issue Syrians need to resolve themselves, such as happened with President of Yemen Ali Abdullah Saleh.
Russia may provide political asylum for al-Assad if no such guarantees can be given to him and his family by western states, as stated by Vladimir Sotnikov, senior scientist of the Center for International Security of the IWEIR of the RAS. Moscow may have negotiations with Belarus and may convince it to give asylum to al-Assad to avoid extra annoyances of western states. Alexander Lukashenko is fine with that, the expert says.
