General Robert Mood, head of the UN Supervision Mission for cease-fire in Syria, has left Damascus today. He said at the Dama Rose Hotel before heading to Geneva that the mission was pointless without political progress, ITAR-TASS reports.
The general emphasized that there should be no military solution to the crisis. Efficient leadership of the UN Security Council is needed, he believes. Mood added that the 400 men and women taking part in the monitoring the process did their best.
The monitoring mission expires on July 21. The mission of 300 observers still needs a resolution of the Security Council for extension. Russia proposes extending it by 3 more months. The western resolution extends it by 45 days and includes new sanctions against Damascus. The western resolution would most likely be vetoed.
