Russia prevented war with Iran

Russia nullified the contract on shipments of S-300 anti-missile complexes to Iran in order to prevent a war with the Islamic Republic, Iranian Ambassador to Moscow Mahmoud Reza Sajadi said. Russia cancelled the contract in order to prevent an attack by western states on Bushehr, the diplomat explained, Trend reports on Thrusday.

The UN Security Council passed resolution 1929 in June 2010, limiting shipments of weapons to Iran, including missiles, missile systems, tanks, combat helicopters, jets and vessels. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev banned shipments of S-300 complexes, armored vehicles and combat aircraft and ships to Iran on September 22, 2010.

The head of Rosoboronexport, Anatoly Isaykin, said on June 20, 2011, that the deal could be fulfilled if the sanctions were lifted.

Russia signed the contract in late 2007, preparing to ship five S-300PMU-1 complexes worth some $800 million. Medvedev signed the decree on fulfilling the fourth resolution on Iran of the UN Security Council of June 9, 2010.

Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said in early March 2012 that no new contracts on S-300 missile complexes for Iran would be signed.

The Aerospace Industries Organization filed a lawsuit against Rosoboronexport to the Arbitration Court of Geneva for $3,985,159,773,32 on April 13, 2011. The process has not started yet.

Russia cancelled the contract and returned $166.8 million as prepayment for the contract.
