The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) of Moldova has refused to hold a
referendum on joining the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and
Kazakhstan, that was initiated by the Social Democratic Party. As
the chairman of the CEC Yuri Ciocan said today,
of the 230 thousand signatures collected in support of the referendum,
only 32 thousand were valid, ITAR-TASS reported.
"In total, the commission has identified more than 20 categories
the mistakes and falsifications, including duplicate pages, incorrect
or non-existent names and passport details. Some lists have been
copied from the electoral lists and included the deceased, the under-aged or
foreigners," the head of the CEC said.
"We knew in advance that the CEC would refuse to hold a referendum on
political grounds," the chairman of the Social Democratic Party
(SDP) Victor Selin said.
According to Moldovan law, in order to initiate a referendum it is
necessary to collect at least 200 thousand signatures.
According to the recent polls, Moldova shows a growing number of
citizens who support the entry of the republic to the Eurasian Union.
Thus, according to a study carried out by the "Voice of the People", the idea of
joining the Eurasian Union is supported by about 40% of the
population, while only 44% of the respondents want the country to join
the EU, which is 17% less than last year.
