Georgian community wants polling stations to open in Russia

The Georgian community of Russia demands opening of polling stations in Russia for the parliamentary elections of October 1, as stated by Teymuraz Shengel, leader of Voice of Georgia – For Fair Elections, RIA Novosti reports.

Russia has about 1 million Georgians. Tbilisi broke all relations with Moscow in 2008 for Russia’s recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Registry of votes will end on September 10. The Georgian Central Electoral Commission gave a week for the registry. Shengel says that such little time makes the process impossible. The Georgian community plans to call for amendments to the Georgian Electoral Code.

A related petition to simplify the registration rules has already been filed to the Georgian Foreign Ministry, but no response has been received.
