NATO chief sees peaceful solution to Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at the Azerbaijani Diplomatic Academy in Baku today that resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict requires dialogue and readiness for compromise, 1news.az reports.

He added that NATO supports the Minsk process and efforts.

Rasmussen expressed concerns over pardoning of Azerbaijani officer Ramil Safarov. The secretary general believes that it may cause repercussions in stability and security of South Caucasus and the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

Moreover, Rasmussen noted that NATO was not planning military intervention in Syria without approval of the UN. He said that the situation in Libya differs. The military operation in Libya has a mandate of the UNSC.

The secretary general considers political decisions the best way to resolve the crisis in Syria. He noted that NATO will protect Turkey.
