The President of Turkey, Abdullah Gül, declared that there should be no doubt about the course of the country’s foreign policy and that Turkey is a part of Europe, TRT Russian informs. In his interview for the London-based 'Times' newspaper, President Gül commented on the Israeli aggression against the humanitarian aid fleet and Turkish-Iranian relations.
He also denied the statement that Turkey had “turned its back on the West”, stressing that joining the EU is one of the main aims of Turkish foreign policy, and that Turkey is the only state in the region standing for democratic values.
Answering a question about Hamas, which is recognised by many countries as a terrorist organization, President Gül said that he respects the choice of the Palestinian people. Gül also said that Turkey and Israel had always been allies, but that he could not react in any other way to the events.
The course of Turkish foreign policy is becoming more and more independent and confident, and Turkey is no longer implementing foreign political programs.
The President also mentioned that the sanctions against Iran concern him, in the context of the possibility of a war such as that in Iraq.
