Today the Russian State Duma approved the law about a single voting day to be held in
a year on the second Sunday of September, meaning that the next election will take place in October 2012, while allothers will take place in September.
After being approved by the Duma in July, this law was rejected by the Federation Council. The speaker of the Federation Council, ValentinaMatvienko, explained that this was for purely juridical reasons.
It was also suggested that the day of the elections should be moved to October.
A new law about the elections for members of the Federation Councilwas also approved.
This measure was proposed by Vladimir Putin in June. The Federation Councilwill still be a non-party body, but the candidates will
have to run in regional elections. If the law gains final approval it
could come into force on January 1, 2013, RIA Novosti reports.
