Saakashvili's defeat will encourage Russian-Georgian economic cooperation

The defeat of the Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement party will encourage Russian-Georgian economic cooperation, the head of the Political Situation Center, Sergey Mikheyev, told VK.

At the October 1st parliamentary elections, the ruling party received 40.33 per cent of votes and the opposition Georgian Dream coalition - 54.94 per cent, meaning that the United National Movement party has lost its parliamentary majority.

"The polls showed that the political situation in Georgia has changed. The majority of Georgians now oppose Saakashvili," Mikheyev said.

"The future depends on the way Saakashvili and Ivanishvili will cooperate. Some experts believe they are ready for sufficient cooperation, other say they are enemies."

"No crucial change in Georgia's position on Abkhazia and South Ossetia should be expected. Georgian politicians are not ready to change their line on this issue," Mikheyev believes.

"It's clear that the Georgians voted for changes. Let's hope that these changes will be favourable for Russian-Georgian relations," he said.
