Military to fight militants in North Caucasus

 

The National Counter-Terrorism Committee of Russia will use the armed forces to fight terrorism in the North Caucasus in early October 2012, Interfax reports.

Four soldiers were killed and several were wounded in an operation in Dagestan’s Buynaksk at the end of last week.

The counter-terrorism regime operation in Chechnya was announced in 1999 after attacks of Basayev and Hattab in Dagestan. The United Group of Forces was formed by the Russian president in September 1999. The military took part in operations of the North Caucasus for 8 years.

The main militant forces were destroyed in 2006.

The 42nd motorized division with over 15,000 people has been operating in Chechnya since 2000. Three motorized brigades were formed in 2009. They operate in Chechnya and have about 10,000 soldiers. The 46th brigade of the Interior Forces operates in Chechnya, Vzglyad reports.
