NATO does not publish plans on Turkey protection

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at a two-day meeting of 28 defense ministers in Brussels on Tuesday that the alliance had plans to protect Turkey, RIA Novosti reports.

Escalation of tensions of Syria and Turkey happened on October 3. 5 people were killed and 11 injured by a Syrian artillery shot in Turkey’s Akchakale. Turkey opened counter-fire.

Rasmussen says that the UN Security Council should pass a resolution on Syria.

The NATO Council discussed the artillery incident. Turkey was assured that article 5 of the Washington Treaty will protect it in cases of foreign aggression. The article has only been used once so far, after the attacks on September 11, 2001.

NATO and the UN demanded Syria to stop aggression against Turkey. Syrian authorities expressed condolences to families whose relatives were killed by the artillery shot.
