The commanders of the Syrian army on Thursday officially announced the suspension of military operations throughout Syria during the celebration of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha (from 26 to 29 October).
"Taking into account our responsibility for the safety of the civilian population and the protection of public institutions, the Syrian armed forces reserve the right to respond to the attempts by armed terrorist groups to strengthen their position by force or ammunition, and in case if the neighboring countries contribute to the penetration of terrorists across the border in Syria, which is in violation of their international obligations," the statement by the army command in Syria says.
Syrian commanders also promise not to leave unanswered terrorist groups’ continuing to fire against civilians and government forces, government and private buildings, especially in the case of car bombs and other explosive devices.
The opposite side of the conflict, namely the militants from the Syrian Free Army (SSA), expressed willingness to make a truce, while demanding the release of captured comrades.
The international community, through the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, has welcomed the news on the armistice by the Syrian authorities. This was announced at a press briefing by the spokesman of the international organization, Martin Nesirky. "Obviously, the world is watching what is going to be there on Friday morning. Everyone, not only the suffering Syrian people, wants the guns to fall silent," RIA Novosti quotes Nesirky.
According to him, it is important that all parties, not just the government, declare a ceasefire in Syria. "As we all know, they do not have enough confidence in each other, and we cannot be sure what will happen. However, it is hoped that the guns will be silent for the sake of the people of Syria, and it will be in peace and quiet during the holy days,” Nesirky said.
