Iranian president and clergy row over tie-wearing

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was critisized by Muslim clergy for saying that it is fine for men to wear ties. In particular, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, an ally of the president, reminded that a fatwa, issued by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, forbids Muslims to wear ties and neckchiefs, News.ru reports.

Iranian conservatives believe that such accessories are symbols of regress and decadence, typical of the West, and compare them with donkey tails. Ahmadinejad said that no religious Muslim leader has forbidden wearing ties. Ahmadinejad is never seen in public wearing a tie. As a son of a worker, he promotes the dress code of the working class.
