The National Science Academy of Azerbaijan (NSAA) has worked out a system to monitor the naming of children by their parents. They say it is necessary to prevent foreign citizens giving children non-existent invented names, contradicting Azerbaijani traditions, Interfax-Azerbaijan reports.
The country does not have a specific law on the issue, so one could name a child by any name, such as “777”, so the NSAA created a data base for acceptable names.
There are three categories in this system: “green”, containing names that could be given to a child without objections; “yellow”, enumerating undesirable names that could be used (for the most part the Soviet names like Sovkhoz); “red” ones, i.e. forbidden names of personalities that have had a negative role in Azerbaijani history. Some Armenian names included in the “red list” are permitted for Azerbaijani citizens of Armenian origin.
The creators of the system used Russian, German, Turkish, Ukrainian, Byelorussian and Estonian experiences in solving similar problems. The “traffic-light” system is due to be put into practice this year.
