In the first ten months of the current Iranian year, Iranian border guards managed to prevent seven terrorist groups from entering the country, Iranian Border Guard Commander Brigadier General Hossein Zolfaghari said, Trend reports referring to Fars.
Zolfaghari noted that one of the last attempts was prevented last week when, due to clashes at the border, guards were forced to open fire at the terrorists.
According to Zolfaghari, two terrorists wearing vests with explosives tried to cross the border, but as a result of the armed clash with the guards they had to flee to Pakistan.
The Commander said that the border police managed to discover 24 million liters of illicit fuel and about 90 tons of drugs this year.
Noting that the border police of Iran has intensified its work with regard to smuggling, Zolfaghari said that compared to last year 69 percent more fuel, 82 percent more drugs and 50 percent more alcohol were discovered by the border police this year.
Iran spends billions of dollars and has lost thousands of its police troops in the war against traffickers.
Due to its persistent efforts, Iran makes 89 percent of the world's total opium seizures and has become the leading country in the anti-drug campaign.
