Georgian speaker of parliament meets president

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili met Speaker of Parliament David Usupashvili and leader of the parliamentary minority David Bakradze last evening. Saakashvili expressed concerns about his speech at the National Library, ruined by pardoned political convicts last Friday.

Saakashvili called them a criminal gang. Usupashvili disagreed, calling them protesters who had violated the law. He noted that the president’s speech at the parliament had not been fully cancelled and had been postponed instead. Such speeches had been made in late March.

Bakradze was satisfied with the meeting. He pointed out that it was important to continue constitutional amendments with involvement of opposition. He wants mechanisms that would protect opposition from pressure.

Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili did not attend the meeting, confirming his attitude towards the president, as expressed on Friday.

Usupashvili represented the Georgian Dream coalition during the talks.
