Turkish PM notes headscarf freedom without charter amendment

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has suggested that there is no need for a constitutional change to lift a ban on wearing headscarves in government offices, adding there are no obstacles for women wearing headscarves that prevent them from becoming a mayor or lawmaker, Hurriyet reports.

“Our sisters with headscarves are at the moment able to work at Ziraat Bank. They are able to work at Turkish Airlines. We have given hope and excitement to these friends and it will have a follow up, this changes according to each workplace,” Erdoğan was quoted as saying on February 27 while speaking to a group of journalists onboard a plane en route from Vienna to Istanbul.
