Russia ceases to be "major threat" to Georgia

Russia ceases to be "major threat" to Georgia

This afternoon the Georgian parliament adopted a new concept
"On the main directions of foreign policy." The document states
the necessity of the return of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to Georgia, as
well as the need for a constructive dialogue with Moscow.

The previous concept of national security, approved in 2012, recognized
Russia as "a major threat" to Georgia.

MPs from the United National Movement party have expressed their
disapproval of the course on the improvement of relations with Moscow
fearing that it could leave Georgia without the support of the West.

The new concept also states that "Georgia should promote convergence
of the interests of the U.S., the EU and Russia in the South Caucasus
based on the interests of our state."

Vice Speaker of Saakashvili's party Baramidze said that the document
does not document the refusal of Georgia to become part of the CIS and
does not mention the fact that Georgia will not become part of the
Eurasian Customs Union or the CSTO.
