Armenia does not believe that the recognition of the killing of
Armenians by Turks in 1915 as genocide is fundamental to the
establishment of Turkish-Armenian ties, Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan said.
“We did not make the recognition of the Armenian genocide a
precondition for the establishment of Armenian-Turkish relations,
since we stand for improvement of relations with Turkey without any
preconditions,” Sargsyan told the Syrian Al-Watan newspaper during his
visit to the Middle East state.
“I do not think the attempts to tie the process to the recognition of
the Armenian genocide by other countries are correct. But one thing is
obvious to me – the longer it takes to normalize our relations, the
more countries will adopt such resolutions,” he added.
The Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives
narrowly approved a resolution on recognition of the "genocide" of
Armenians on March 4. The Swedish parliament also adopted a similar
resolution.
“The resolution discussed in the U.S. Congress is the internal affair
of that country and something that we will not interfere in, no matter
how important from a moral point of view we may consider it,” the
Armenian leader also said.
