Today the parliament of Georgia adopted amendments to the
Constitution, which severely restrict the powers of the president. In
particular, the head of the state no longer has the sole right to
appoint the cabinet if the parliament is dismissed.
It is reported that 114 deputies voted in favor of the amendments. All
in all, there are 150 MPs in the Georgian parliament, three seats
are vacant, News-Georgia reports.
Under the amendments, after the dissolution of the parliament the
President will not be able to appoint a Cabinet of Ministers which had
been previously lost three votes of no confidence in the parliament.
In addition, the dissolution of parliament is prohibited on the eve of
presidential elections from May until the inauguration of the newly-elected head of state.
