MGIMO president arrives in Baku

Graduates of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) have gathered in Baku for their first universal forum planned for Friday. MGIMO President Anatoly Torkunov made a speech at the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences.


He noted that the most important factors were humanitarian, economic cooperation of Russia and Azerbaijan and devotion to interests.


Torkunov said that the US was suffering from unemployment and social injustice, China had overcome the first phase of the crisis, but needed economic changes and Russia was saved by income from sales of resources.


The official commented on Nagorno-Karabakh, stating that the human factor was greater than expected.


Khafiz Pashayev, President of the Azerbaijani Diplomatic Academy, awarded Torkunov with the diploma of an honorary doctor. Pashayev praised cooperation efforts of MGIMO started in 2007.


Graduates of 25 countries want to attend the meeting. They include graduates from Russia, China, Cuba, South Korea, Israel, Ukraine, Slovakia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Poland and Kazakhstan. Over 400 people will arrive. ITAR-TASS Director General Sergey Mikhailov, his deputy Mikhail Gusman, Russian Minister for Culture Vladimir Medinsky, head of Rossotrudnichestvo Constantine Kosachyov will participate.


Moscow will host the MGIMO conference next year and mark the 70th anniversary of the institute.
