Turkey is pressuring Northern Cyprus to start political and economic reforms amid growing public discontent with the administration as diplomatic moves to resume talks on the island’s reunification gain speed, Hürriyet Daily News reports.
On April 29 Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay met with Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister İrsen Küçük and presented a comprehensive study conducted by the Economic Policy Research Foundation of Turkey (TEPAV) reflecting the growing displeasure of the public over the status of the country.
Küçük was reportedly annoyed by the representation, the new agency informs.
Atalay urged the authorities of North Cyprus to take the report seriously. “We also use surveys to decide our moves in Turkey, there is a problem here that should be addressed,” Atalay is quoted as saying.
