EU Chief Diplomat Catherine Ashton said after a meeting with 27 foreign ministers in Brussels today that they had found no common grounds on lifting the embargo against Syria and may decide for themselves whether to sell weapons to Syria or not. The only decision they made is that they will not start selling military equipment immediately.
Ashton said that the EU states will find a solution before August 1
British Foreign Secretary William Hague said that lack of consent meant there was no embargo. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius noted that they neither lifted, nor extended the embargo.
EU sanctions against Syria expire on May 31. Economic sanctions in black lists were extended for dozens of people and organizations working with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Members of the EU may start selling weapons to Syria on Saturday.
