The European Parliament's subcommittee for human rights discussed the situation in Russia on June 28th. A member of the Pussy Riot punk band and a lawyer for the jailed Russian tycoon and major Putin opponent Mikhail Khodorkovsky took part in the discussion, the press service of Mikhail Khodorkovsky reports on its official website.
The attendees of the meeting agreed that the situation surrounding human rights in Russia is changing for the worse. The European MPs expressed special concern about the new regulations that complicates the operation of non-governmental organizations and violations of LGBT rights.
Billionaire William Browder, employer of Sergey Magnitsky, who was reportedly killed in a Russian prison as he investigated corruption cases, also took part in the meeting. Browder is now wanted by the Russian police, who claim that he illegally acquired shares in Russia's gas-producing giant Gazprom. Browder says that the case is politically motivated.
