The Turkish government announced yesterday that it was ready to compromise with protesters defending Gezi Park. According to the new plan, the park will be demolished, but in its place the authorities will build a museum or an exposition centre, rather than a mall or a hotel.
Thus the authorities decided not to hold early parliamentary elections.
"There is no need to hold elections now," Trend cites the deputy chairman of the ruling Justice and Development party (AKP), Hussein Celik, as saying.
Protesters reacted to these statements with further rallies and clashes with the police. This means that political tensions in the country are probably going to increase.
