US president agrees to grant Syrian opposition military supplies

US President Barack Obama has decided to grant Syrian opposition military supplies after receiving information about use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government. The Supreme Council of the Free Syrian Army will receive military supplies, The New York Times cites Ben Rhodes, Deputy Advisor for Strategic Communication for the President.

According to Rhodes, the Syrian regime used sarin gas against the rebels, killing 100-150 of them. CIA will send anti-tank and small weapons.

US instructors will train Syrian rebels in Jordan. Experts of the Pentagon want to set the no-fly zone over Syria 25km deep along the border of Jordan and use Patriot missiles and F-16 fighters to enforce it.

They also believe that the plan would not need sanctions of the UNSC because Syrian aerospace would not be violated.

Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham approved Obama’s idea of military aid, but expressed fear that the aid would not include weapons and would only consist of auxiliary materials and equipment.
