World powers have welcomed Hassan Rouhani's victory in the Iranian presidential elections, while Israel stresses the major role of the Islamic Republic's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei and seems sceptical about Rouhani's intentions.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon welcomed Rouhani's victory and expressed hope that the new president would play a positive role in a peaceful resolution of the conflict surrounding the Iranian nuclear programme.
EU foreign policy chief Cathrine Ashton also welcomed Rouhani's election, saying that she expects rapid progress over the nuclear issue.
Similar statements have already been made by German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle and his French counterpart Laurent Fabiu.
Israel, however, remains sceptical about possible progress in the Iranian nuclear talks, saying that it is Ayatollah Khamenei who makes the final decisions in the Islamic Republic.
"Iran should observe international agreements and stop supporting terrorism worldwide," a statement by the Israeli foreign ministry says.
Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu demands that the international community should continue putting pressure on Iran in order to force the country to stop its nuclear programme.
