The new president of Iran, Hassan Rouhani, said today during his first press conference that the policy of his predecessor will be corrected. He did not rule out dialogue with the U.S., but only under certain conditions, and announced his readiness for a greater transparency on the nuclear program, and said that Iran is entering a "new era."
The main topics addressed at the press conference were the situation in Syria, Iran's nuclear program, internal policy and relations with the West, including Washington.
Also, he did not rule out direct dialogue with the United States, which regularly introduces new economic sanctions against Tehran. However, he said, such negotiations are possible only on the basis that the American side respects certain conditions that may contribute to the creation of mutual trust between the two countries.
"We must understand that there are certain conditions under which a dialogue can take place (between Tehran and Washington). In the first place, it's non-interference in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Secondly, it is the U.S. recognition of the rights of Iran to possess the peaceful atom. Under these conditions fertile ground for a possible dialogue could be created," RIA Novosti quotes Rouhani.
Earlier, Washington said it was ready for direct talks with Tehran over its nuclear program.
