A new investigation initiated by the new Georgian government has found that the murder of Sandro Ghirgvliani was ordered by the then-chief of the General Inspection of Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia, Data Akhalia, the state prosecutor Irakli Tkeshelashvili said.
According to the prosecutor, the investigation, which began in late 2012, found that the murder of Sandro Ghirgvliani, apart from Akhalia, involved others, who were not convicted in the first trial. At least two high-ranking police officials are said to be involved, Georgia Online reports.
At the same time, the investigation has established that the convicted prisoners received a large monetary reward for their silence. According to the prosecutors, the prisoners are serving sentences in particularly privileged conditions and their stay in prison is practically no different from the lives of those free and financially well-off.
Vestnik Kavkaza reported earlier that the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia intends to press charges against the former Prime Minister of Georgia, Vano Merabishvili, in relation to the Ghirgvliani case.
