Anders Fogh Rasmussen is seriously concerned about persecution of officials in Georgia

The NATO Secretary General, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, at a joint press conference with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has expressed "serious concern" about the prosecutions of high-ranking officials in Georgia. "We stressed that there are questions about this, and it is impossible for there to be the slightest hint of political motivation in courts' decisions," the secretary general of NATO said.

The new government of Georgia, Rasmussen added, promised that everything is fair and only criminal cases are being investigated. "They convinced me that, in these cases the principle of the rule of law will be met," he said.

Saakashvili said at the same press conference that there has been a statement by the foreign ministers of the EU countries, who moved Georgia just a week ago "from the category of honors to losers." "Ministers have said that Georgia, which previously had only been praised, has begun to back away from the democratic process, which is a serious concern. This is a serious warning," Saakashvili said.
