Shevchenko sees progress in protection of human rights in Caucasus

Chechen Leader Ramzan Kadyrov, vice prime ministers of regional governments, NGOs and law enforcers discussed development of the civil society and protection of human rights in the Caucasus in Grozny. Journalist Maksim Shevchenko called the meeting constructive, though tensions between Kadyrov and human rights activists were visible.

The journalist said that Kadyrov was quite honest at the talks and was giving his personal evaluations of human rights protection in the region for four hours.

The second part of the talks was notable for a rigorous conversation of Igor Kalyapin and Kadyrov. Shevchenko said that he was informed about the death of journalist Ahmednabi Ahmednabiyev in the morning, the 17th journalist killed in Chechnya since 1992.

Shevchenko says that hecould not believe in the death of Haji Murat Kamalov.

E noted that there were offensive materials published about Ahmednabiyev’s death, proving that it did not happen by the hands of the Dagestanis. He was probably killed by Wahhabis.

Members of the Presidential Council for Human Rights visited prison N1 in Chernokozovo and met its convicts. Mikhail Fedotov, head of the Presidential Council for Development of the Civil Society and Human Rights, said that it was an old prison and that there were no interethnic conflicts in it. There were no obstacles for Muslims or Christians. The prison has no rooms for praying.

Yelena Topoleva-Soldunova, head of the Permanent Commission of the Presidential Council for Human Rights, said that Chechnya had no nurseries, due to local mentality. Any children who lost parents are always taken to their closest relatives for upbringing.
