Israel will not continue shipments of weapons to Georgia

The head of the Israeli parliamentary commission for foreign affairs and security, Avigdor Lieberman, has denied information about plans to renew shipments of weapons to Georgia. He added that the topic had not even been discussed at a meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili.

Lieberman explained that Georgia had no finances to purchase weapons and Ivanishvili preferred to improve relations with Russia, instead of escalating confrontation. Ivanishvili is focusing on restoring the economy and attracting foreign investment.

The Israeli official believes that the South Caucasus should remain a priority of Israeli foreign policy.

Currently, Lieberman, head of the Our Home Israel Party, is charged with abuse of power when he was Foreign Minister. He may be banned from holding government office. Israeli lawyers say that he will be exonerated of the charges. The trial will take place in October-November.
