A new round of talks between Iran and the 5+1 group (the USA, the UK, France, Russia, China and Germany) devoted to the Islamic Republic's nuclear programme began in Brussels today. According to EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, the group is deeply concerned about the situation surrounding Iran's nuclear project and is looking forward to the results of the talks.
VK discussed the issue with the head of the news agency's European bureau, Orkhan Sattarov.
Iran has strengthened its position in the international community after the presidential elections. Newly-elected President Rouhani, who is supported by many countries, is able to adopt a better-balanced course.
"As the chief nuclear negotiator, Hassan Rouhani has already shown that he was ready for compromise and signed an additional protocol in the framework of its agreement with the IAEA. Moreover he has said that Iran is ready to make its nuclear project more transparent in order to pacify the international community," the expert says.
He notes, however, that any attempts to improve Iran's relations with the United States will be obstructed by Israel and the Israeli lobby in America.
Sattarov underlines that the temporary success of the ruling regime in Syria also strengthens Iran's position.
"In general, Iran has a good chance of having the international sanctions against the Islamic Republic eased," he says.
