The issue of holding early parliamentary elections in Georgia is almost settled, the Georgian newspaper "Alia" reported today with reference to a confidential source.
"The reason for the early parliamentary elections, according to the coalition members, is to get rid of the "United National Movement" (the party of President Mikheil Saakashvili.) They also hide the fact that there has been a split in the majority party," the newspaper writes.
According to the newspaper, the Prime Minister of Georgia, leader of the coalition "Georgian Dream" Bidzina Ivanishvili, will leave 50 people from the current composition of the parliamentary majority on the new electoral list. The leaders of the "Republican Party" and the party's defense minister Irakli Alasania are not among them.
Rimour has it that Ivanishvili is tired of Republicans' "bragging" about the Venice Commission and the West. In addition, the possible merger of the Republicans and the team Alasaniya will not bring "Georgian Dream" any good.
The CEC of Georgia is considering a proposal from a group that includes representatives of the NGO "Former Political Prisoners for Human Rights", demanding a referendum on early parliamentary elections in 2014. An application has been filed with the Central Electoral Commission of Georgia on July 23.
