Five years after the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict, the overwhelming majority of Russians still support the Russian Federation's decision to recognize the sovereignty of South Ossetia, according to survey data released today by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM).
In 2008, this opinion was held by 84% of respondents, today three-quarters of Russians approve of it, according to RIA Novosti.
"The majority of Russians today believe that Russia did the right thing by supporting South Ossetia in August 2008 (71%) .... The decision to recognize the sovereignty of South Ossetia five years ago is supported by three-quarters of respondents (75%). Basically it is the supporters of "United Russia" (79%), as well as dwellers of Moscow and St. Petersburg (80%), residents of large (81%) and medium-sized cities (78%)," the statement of sociologists reads.
