The Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, arrived in Abkhazia today on a brief working visit. It is the first visit of the Russian head of state to the country since it declared its independence.
"We will continue to develop our good-neighbourly relations with Abkhazia and our partnership in the fields of the economy and security," declared Mr Medvedev during his meeting with Abkhaz president Sergy Bagapsh.
The Russian president called his visit to Abkhazia on the 8th of August a symbolic gesture, as it is the date when, two years ago, tragic events in South Ossetia triggered a whole series of political changes, including the declaration of Abkhaz and South Ossetian sovereignty, ITAR-TASS reports him as saying.
