The CDU of Angela Merkel won the German parliamentary polls with about 42% of the vote. The CSU, the Bavarian twin party of the CDU chaired by Horst Seehofer, received 49.3% of the votes cast. The party needed only 4 mandates for an absolute majority, an achievement comparable with that of Conrad Adenauer. 71.5% of the population voted at the parliamentary polls.
The Greens got over 8%, compared with 10.7% at the elections in 2008. Die Linke got 8.6%, compared with 12% in 2009. Overall, the 18th calling of the German parliament consists of CDU/CSU with 41.5% of the seats (311 seats), the SPD 25.7% (192), Die Linke 8.6% (64) and the Greens 8.4% (63).
