Beniamin Popov, Director of the Center for Partnership of Civilization of the Institute for International Studies of MGIMO, emphasized that the decisive role in awarding the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) was played by its participation in utilization of chemical weapons in Syria.
Popov noted that the Russian Foreign Ministry also deserved the prize for initiating the process. The official recalled that the prize was awarded by the Swiss and their choice was often peculiar. He recalled that the EU had received the prize in 2012.
The expert emphasized the role of Russia and its striving to free the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction.
He concluded that success of the Geneva-2 conference in early November would become a direct achievement of the Russian initiative.
