Vladimir Yevseyev: Iran has offered a lot but asked for even more

The meeting between the six international negotiators and the new Iranian delegation which has just taken place in Geneva has led to mixed impressions, primarily due to a mismatch between the expectations and proposals of the Iranian side, the director of the Center for Public Policy Research, Vladimir Yevseyev told Vestnik Kavkaza.

"On the one hand, Iran has taken serious steps, in particular in regard to the possibility of decreasing uranium enrichment from 2)% to 5%." Yevseyev also noted that Iran seems to be ready to voluntarily introduce the Additional Protocol of 1997 on the application of safeguards. This additional protocol allows for the organization of unannounced inspections of all facilities that may be suspected of carrying out military-applied research, Yevseyev said.

Yevseyev said that even though Iran made certain serious concessions, it has also asked a lot from the European negotiators. According to Yevseyev, Iran might not understand what it is asking for. Yevseyev also described Iran's demand to lift all international sanctions as "unrealistic."

Yevseyev suggested that the ideal goal for Iran in the current negotiations is a return of the Iranian nuclear dossier from the Security Council to the IAEA, provided that Iran agrees to suspend operation of the Fordo uranium-enrichment plant.

Yevseyev suggested that certain sanctions on the purchase of Iranian oil could be lifted as well. He mentioned the pressure on Japan, Korea and India regarding their purchases of Iranian oil.
